Saranagati in practice

Saranagati in practice

At the beginning of the year my earphones broke, which caused a lot of inconvenience, especially during the lockdown, during which all my meetings were held online. Although I really needed them for my service, I decided to not ask for new ones, and to instead wait for Krishna to make arrangements. Internally, I had a feeling that Krishna would help when the time was right.

Months passed by, and I attended all the meetings without earphones, but I was determined to wait for Krishna rather than making my own arrangements.

What happened next is really extraordinary, at least in my eyes.

For years I’ve been going on daily walks, as a part of my daily exercise.

The same route every day, following in the footsteps of Srila Prabhupada, who walked the same path whilst staying at Bhaktivedanta Manor.

These walks are my saviour and best friend. These 45 minutes of silence when I’m away from everyone gives me space to spend time with my own self. Sometimes I would listen to a class whilst on the walk, and sometimes I would chant my Japa. At other times I would learn some mantras from Srimad Bhagavatam, and meditate on their meaning.

There are times when I wouldn’t do any of these activities, and instead spend time reflecting on experiences I had had during the last few days and weeks.

Today, I was walking and praying for guidance in my service. Being a pujari, I’m at “high risk” of committing seva aparadha, which is detrimental to our spiritual life.

Deity worship is a great opportunity to serve the Lord directly and receive lots of blessings, but at the same time if we are not in proper consciousness we can destroy everything good that we did, by being negligent in our service.

As I was walking and reflecting on my service, a thought came to my mind that, “I wish I could have earphones for tomorrow’s meeting, so that I don’t need to keep the phone by my head for a couple of hours, or use a loudspeaker, which will disturb others around me.”

As I was thinking like this and walking, in front of me I saw something white on the ground.

I just happened to be in the middle of the footpath close to the fields full with many cows pastoring the grounds.

As I looked at this white thing on the ground, I noticed that they were earphones!

Yes, earphones, in the middle of the footpath in a secluded area of the village!

As I went to pick them up, I noticed that they were brand new, still stiff as if just taken out of the box, and left there for me to collect.

I took them and realised that they are a top brand, very expensive, and are a perfect fit for my phone.

Tears came to my eyes. “It must be Krishna’s arrangement,” I said loudly to myself, looking around if anyone was searching for their lost earphones.

What are the chances that I would find brand new, top brand, expensive earphones, exactly the ones that I need, whilst walking in the remote park in the quiet village?

I took it as Krishna’s mercy.

It is not so much about the earphones, but it proves how Krishna is always accompanying us and he is a witness to every single activity we perform at all times in our life.

I desired new earphones for my service, and I depended on Krishna to provide them when he was ready.

It took some time, but he made an arrangement for me. Not only did he give me earphones, but he gave me top quality ones, the best you can get on the market.

Krishna is always looking at different ways to increase our faith in him. He wants us to learn the art of depending on him in all circumstances of life. He wants us to practice saranagati.

Although Krishna gave me earphones, which are much needed for my service, he gave me something even more precious, and that is a little bit more faith that he will always provide what we lack and protect what we have.
